Former Detroit Lions linebacker Jessie Lemonier has died, the team confirmed Thursday. He was 25.
Lemonier, who was drafted by the XFL’s Arlington Renegades in November, instead recently signed with the USFL’s Houston Gamblers for the upcoming season before being traded to the Birmingham Stallions.
“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of former Detroit Lion Jessie Lemonier,” the Lions said in a statement posted on Twitter.
“Jessie was a model teammate and wonderful young man who is gone far too soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”
“Gone too soon. Our hearts are with Jessie’s family, friends and loved ones,” a statement via the Chargers’ Twitter page read on Thursday, mourning Lemonier.
During Lemonier’s final seasons with Liberty, he earned MVP honors in the 2019 Cure Bowl when the school won its first bowl game.
Lemonier’s agent, Drew Smith, told ESPN he and his girlfriend were expecting a baby.
Lemonier signed with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Liberty University in 2020. He played in six games with them in 2020, according to Pro Football Reference.
Lemonier spent one season with the Chargers, appearing in six games in which he registered two tackles. After getting waived in August 2021, he was signed by the Lions.
He totaled 15 tackles and 1.5 sacks across seven games before being waived last May.

Lemonier was claimed off waivers by the Arizona Cardinals but was released in August before the start of the 2022 season.
His agent, Drew Smith of DEC Management, told ESPN that Lemonier and his girlfriend were expecting a child.
Lemonier, a native of Hialeah, Florida, originally signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Liberty in 2020. He saw action in six games, making two tackles.
